Definition

A coordinate refers to a number or set of numbers that identify the position of a point on a graph or coordinate plane.

More specifically:

  • In two dimensions, a coordinate is written as an ordered pair: (x,y)

  • x is the horizontal position (left or right, along the x-axis).

  • y is the vertical position (up or down, along the y-axis).

Example:

The point (3, -2) means:

  • Move 3 units to the right on the x-axis.

  • Move 2 units down on the y-axis.

So, in summary:

A coordinate is a number or pair of numbers that tell you the exact location of a point on a graph.
