Definition

Corresponding parts are the matching sides and angles of two figures, usually triangles, that are in the same relative position.

Key points:

  • In congruent figures, corresponding parts are congruent.

  • In similar figures, corresponding angles are congruent, and corresponding sides are proportional.

  • The order of the letters in a congruence or similarity statement shows which parts correspond.

Example

If triangle ABC is congruent to triangle DEF, then the corresponding parts are:


  • Angles: ∠A≅∠D, ∠B≅∠E, ∠C≅∠F

  • Sides: AB≅DE, BC≅EF, AC≅DF


This is often written as CPCTC: Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent.
