Definition

A linear function is a type of function that can be represented by a straight line on a graph. It has the general form:


y = mx + b


where m is the slope of the line (indicating its steepness) and b is the y-intercept (the point where the line crosses the y-axis). Linear functions have a constant rate of change and produce a straight line when graphed, reflecting a consistent relationship between the independent variable x and the dependent variable y.
