Definition

The y-intercept of a graph is the point where the graph crosses the y-axis. At this point, the value of x is zero. The y-intercept can be expressed as a coordinate in the form (0, y).

Key Features:

  1. Finding the Y-Intercept: To determine the y-intercept of a linear equation, set x = 0 and solve for y.

  2. Graphical Representation: The y-intercept indicates the value of the function when the input is zero, providing insight into the graph's behavior.

  3. Multiple Intercepts: A graph can have one or none y-intercepts, depending on the type of function.

Example:

For the equation y = 3x + 2, setting x = 0 gives:


y = 3(0) + 2 → y = 2


Thus, the y-intercept is (0, 2).
