Area of Composite Figures (Day 4)

Lesson Prep

Lesson Details

  • Duration: 50 minutes

  • Learning Goal: Work on uncovered misconceptions from last class and apply understanding of composite figures.

Prework

  • Read Nora Oswald's Bucket of Lies to prepare for activity

  • Cut out class sets of cards and gather "buckets" for Bucket of Lies activity

Classwork

Standards

Common Core

  • 6.G.A.1 – Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

TEKS

  • G.11(A) – apply the formula for the area of regular polygons to solve problems using appropriate units of measure

  • G.11(B) – determine the area of composite two-dimensional figures comprised of a combination of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, kites, regular polygons, or sectors of circles to solve problems using appropriate units of measure
